The Prime Minister of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Rt Hon Andrew Byakutaga visited CNOOC Uganda offices on Thursday as part of his outreach to development partners and companies operating in Bunyoro region.
CNOOC Uganda is a licensed company in Uganda to operate the Kingfisher oil field which is located in Kyangwali sub-county.
CNOOC Uganda Limited (an overseas branch of CNOOC Limited) is partnering with Total E&P Uganda in the development of Uganda’s oil resources in the Albertine basin in western Uganda.
In 2012, Tullow Oil farmed-down an agreement with Total E&P Uganda and CNOOC Uganda Limited in which they each acquired a 33.3% interest in the Lake Albert Exploration Areas 1, 1A-Lyec, 2 and 3-Kingfisher.
Each of the 3 partners has an equal stake in the exploration area operated by its partner. CNOOC Uganda Limited and Tullow Oil therefore have an equal stake in Total E&P Uganda’s operations in the Murchison Falls National Park. CNOOC Uganda Limited received a Production License for the Kingfisher area in September 2013.
The companies re currently working with Government of Uganda to develop the commercially viable oil reserves that have been discovered in the Albertine basin.
Rt Hon Byakutaga was flanked by his special assistant for diaspora issues Hon Philip Katahoire and Hon Samuel Tumusiime, the special assistant for youth education and sports.
He said the Kingdom has been reaching out to several companies operating in Bunyoro to ensure that the King’s subjects benefit from the ongoing developments in Bunyoro region.
He said the Kingdom is interested in knowing how the Omukama’s subjects are benefiting in terms of jobs, employment and businesses in the oil sector.
“We need transparency on how companies operating in our region are implementing the local content policy” Byakutaga said.
He appreciated the scholarships and the best performer awards that are offered by CNOOC Uganda to pupils and students from Bunyoro annually.
He observed that much as the cash incentives are good, the better offer would have been providing scholarship grants for pupils and students who advance to the next level.
“If the pupils excel at Primary leaving examination (PLE), it would be better if you give them a scholarship to complete Ordinary level” Byakutaga said.
He suggested that those who excel at O Level be sponsored to complete Advanced level and those who excel at Advanced level be sponsored in to complete their courses in tertiary institutions.
The Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom delegation met with the CNOOC Uganda Vice President Weigen Jin, Zhang Xin, the executive assistant to the CNOOC Uganda President, Aminah Bukenya, the CNOOC Uganda and David Byaruhanga, an official working in the CNOOC Uganda’s Corporate affairs Department.
Mr Weigen said it is a pleasure and honour of CNOOC Uganda to receive a delegation from Bunyoro that is led by the Prime Minister.
He said CNOOC Uganda Is committed to work with the Kingdom to develop the oil and gas industry.
He reported that CNOOC Uganda has developed the Buhuka access road that leads to the Kingfisher oil field.
He revealed CNOOC’s commitment to continue supporting the CNOOC-Bunyoro Amasaza cup, an annual football tournament that is competed for by each county in the seven districts of Bunyoro.
He also noted that CNOOC had supported this year’s 24th coronation anniversary celebrations of Dr Solomon Gafabusa Iguru 1, the Omukama of Bunyoro Kitara.
